Coping strategies following an amputation

Coming to terms with an amputation and the loss of a limb can be extremely difficult. Patients have to come to terms with the fact their bodies have changed forever and will need to concentrate on how they’re going to adapt to these changes.

Informing them of any changes to your routine and activities, any pain you may be experiencing and the emotional response to an amputation can help them to understand the specific problems you are facing and find alternatives and solutions to these problems.

Set goals – setting realistic and achievable goals can help the rehabilitation process after an amputation. Hitting goals can show you the achievements you have made in your recovery and encourage you to keep trying harder. However, setting goals too high can demotivate you and result in a step back in the rehabilitation process.

Get moving – ensuring you complete all recommended exercises can improve your recovery greatly. Exercise is important regardless of your condition, not only to maintain your health but also to improve blood flow and circulation, strength and endurance as well as balance and helping your overall emotional wellbeing too.

Take a break – splitting tasks down into digestible chunks can stop you running out of energy or feeling completely exhausted when a task is completed. Taking a break can give you some much needed rest and help you to be more productive later in the day.

Peer support groups – you should not underestimate the help and knowledge you can gain by speaking to people who are in the same situation as you. They may be able to share hints and tips to make your life easier and help solve problems you may face. You may also find out more information in relation to funding, prostheses and equipment you may otherwise be unaware of.

Losing a limb is life changing. By using some of these coping strategies amputees find the transition period easier.
