How We Helped Steve Rebuild His Life After a Traumatic Brain Injury

Steve was hit by a car when crossing a road and sustained a severe traumatic brain injury.

Steve’s injuries meant he needed a large rehabilitation team and specialist care, yet the local authority was under-supporting him. And throughout his complex legal case, the defendant insurers claimed that Steve was partly at fault for the incident.

How we helped

Despite the ongoing legal disputes, we managed to secure several significant interim payments for Steve. This paid for a wide range of support including private in-patient rehabilitation with a multi-disciplinary community package plus massage and hydrotherapy. In addition, it funded suitable accommodation, transport, accessible leisure and sporting activities and holidays, as well as support for Steve’s family.

Steve was originally given just 16 hours of one-to-one care per week through payments by the local authority.

However, we had arranged a two-to-one private care package with a multi-disciplinary team. So we challenged the local authority’s decision, and secured local authority payments for two-to-one care for 12 hours a day – a major improvement.

We got a therapy dog for Steve, too. The dog-training classes helped him to build his organisational skills, speech and balance – and since he loves dogs, it also boosted his mental wellbeing.

We put in place a tailored fitness and activity programme to suit Steve’s needs and interests, including private 1:1 kickboxing lessons at his home and bespoke gym membership.

Most of all, though, knowing he’s a huge football fan and a Premier League season ticket holder, we arranged ongoing tickets for an accessible lounge at home matches, where he won’t be overwhelmed by crowds and noise.

We also sorted out hospitality tickets for away matches, and for football packages abroad.

This extensive package of support has helped Steve to exceed his mobility rehabilitation goals, and his wellbeing has improved.

There were complex issues in this case, relating to the medical evidence and liability. However, we worked closely with all parties involved and Steve’s case was settled within just three years of the incident.

Our work didn’t end there. Our Court of Protection team continues to support Steve and his family, helping to manage his finances and ensure long-term stability. We have also arranged for the purchase of a suitable property that meets his needs, giving him the security and independence to move forward with his life.
