Compensation for PTSD

Experiencing a traumatic event can trigger a psychological injury which can continue long after any physical injuries have healed. Psychological injuries can be as debilitating as physical injuries, as people can often become isolated and lose their independence.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can occur following a stressful, frightening or distressing event. Commonly this can include a road accident, after an assault or crime, after seeing active military combat or after experiencing a natural disaster.

Awareness and understanding of psychological injuries are increasing and more people are being diagnosed and their injuries recognised. This means more people are getting the support, treatment and compensation they deserve for their psychological injuries.

We fully appreciate that compensation does not lead to a full recovery, but we do understand how compensation can be used to aid the recovery of people’s lives after PTSD or a psychological injury. Our aim is for each of our clients to lead a happy and fulfilling life as possible. This is why our focus is on working with our clients, their families and healthcare professionals to gain access to early funding to help support the recovery process.

Secondary victims and compensation for PTSD

People who have witnessed a traumatic event can sometimes develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, even if the event did not happen to them personally. These are referred to as secondary victims. Witnessing an accident can be difficult for anyone. However, in order for you to successfully claim PTSD compensation as a secondary victim you must:

  • Be a close family member or have a close relationship with the victim.
  • Have witnessed or been present at the immediate aftermath of the accident.
  • Have a direct perception of the accident and not just have heard about it from someone else.
  • Be of reasonable fortitude.
