After a work-related incident, Jack*, 40, was left with a significant crush injury to his dominant arm and hand. Due to his injuries, Jack developed compartment syndrome and he required emergency surgery, followed by another operation to insert metal work into his hand.

Challenges

The physical pain Jack was experiencing was excruciating, and he was getting more frustrated as the days went on.

  • He was also struggling to manage the pain and was unable to work, which was causing financial worries for Jack.
  • But it wasn’t just the physical pain that was taking a toll on Jack. The stress and feeling of helplessness were overwhelming him and impacting his mental health.

How we helped

After contacting CFG, one of our rehabilitation and support coordinators, Sharon Townshend, supported Jack and helped him to overcome the obstacles he was facing.

  • Sharon took the time to listen to all of Jack’s concern, fears and struggles, and offered ongoing support and guidance every step of the way. Together, they navigated the complex maze of medical appointments and rehabilitation, ensuring Jack received the care and treatment he so desperately needed.
  • But it wasn’t just physical support that was provided. Recognising the psychological impact Jack’s injuries were having on his mental health, Sharon reached out to his GP, advocating for additional support from the community mental health teams.
  • Sharon also supported by writing letters and making referrals to relevant services, including to Talking Therapies and community counselling, and the Lighthouse Charity, and offered a listening ear whenever Jack needed it.

All this help and guidance enabled Jack to face the future with renewed courage and resilience.
