John’s Journey to Recovery and Independence

John was a pedestrian when he was hit by a speeding car. He was left with a spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, orthopaedic injuries, and no real function in his hands.

Even before the incident, John was already a vulnerable person. While in hospital, he was only offered limited rehabilitation – and because of his pre-injury difficulties, he struggled to engage with it. He was often in a distressed state.

Initially, the family had consulted another law firm who told them nothing could be done for John until the criminal proceedings were complete. So at that point, they came to CFG.

How we helped

When we took over John’s case, our rehabilitation and support coordinators immediately stepped in. They attended multi-disciplinary team meetings at the hospital and pushed for improvements in his situation. They worked closely with the treating team, especially about his options for being discharged.

Our solicitors were quickly able to locate footage of the incident and arranged for it to be analysed by a specialist. That enabled us to begin working with the defendant, securing over half a million pounds for John to support his ongoing needs.

That funding enabled our team to arrange an extensive package of support for John. This included specialist inpatient rehabilitation, enabling him to make improvements in his functional abilities – which his treating team had thought might never be possible.

We also supported him as he returned to independent living in the community.

And since John isn’t able to make decisions for himself, we also applied to the Court of Protection for the appointment of a financial deputy. Now, as his appointed deputy, our team continues to manage his finances and ensure he has the right support in place, giving him and his family long-term security and peace of mind.
