Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can have a huge impact on peoples’ lives. Symptoms can be extremely severe in some instances and hinder people going about their everyday lives.

Events that can cause PTSD

Many different events can cause PTSD and differ from person to person. What one person reacts to badly may not cause someone else to react at all. Events that can cause a traumatic reaction include:

  • Serious road traffic accidents
  • A traumatic accident at work
  • Violent crime against you (e.g. robbery or mugging)
  • Witnessing a fatal or serious injury
  • Being involved in military combat
  • Experiencing a natural disaster
  • Experiencing sexual abuse

If you have previously suffered from symptoms of depression or anxiety, you can also be more susceptible to developing PTSD as a result of a traumatic event.

Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Treatments can take both physical and psychological forms when dealing with PTSD. Many of the psychotherapies used when treating PTSD aim to help you to think differently about the event or situation, rather than forgetting it or blocking it out.

By talking about the event and making sense of what has happened it can help you to move forward with your life. You should not avoid memories of the event and therapies will help you to become comfortable when talking about what has happened to you. This will help you to control when you are thinking about the event, rather than thoughts occurring all of the time.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – this therapy encourages patients to talk about their experience and learn new ways of thinking that help them to feel better and behave and react to situations in a more suitable way.

Group Therapy – this therapy involves meeting with a group of other people who have been through a similar experience. Speaking with people who have been through something similar to yourself can sometimes be easier, because they truly understand what you’re going through.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy) – this therapy aims to reduce the long-lasting effects of distressing memories by developing more adaptive coping mechanisms. The therapy uses an eight-phase approach that includes asking you to recall distressing images while receiving one of several types of bilateral sensory input, such as side to side eye movements.

Medication – antidepressants may be prescribed to ease symptoms associated with PTSD, as well as helping with any feelings of depression you may be experiencing. Anxiety-reducing medication may also be prescribed to help symptoms, as well as sleeping tablets to aid rest.

Body-focused Therapies – these do not target the PTSD directly, but help with other physical symptoms you may be experiencing. This can include physiotherapy and osteotherapy, as well as massage, acupuncture and medicines to help with relaxation and relieve feelings of stress and anxiety.

Secondary victims and PTSD claims

People who have witnessed a traumatic event can sometimes develop Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, even if the event did not happen to them personally. These people are referred to as secondary victims.

Witnessing an accident can be difficult for anyone. However, in order for you to successfully claim PTSD compensation as a secondary victim you must:

  • Be a close family member or have a close relationship to the victim.
  • Have witnessed or been present at the immediate aftermath of the accident.
  • Have a direct perception of the accident and not just have heard about if from someone else.
  • Be of reasonable fortitude.

Possible causes of PTSD

Although it is not clear why some people develop PTSD after a traumatic event, some research has suggested these as possible causes or reasons:

  1. Instinct mechanism for survival – it is thought that reliving the experience and processing it will better prepare you if you encounter the experience again.
  2. Levels of adrenaline – it has been found that people with PTSD produce higher levels of stress hormones, such as adrenaline. The production of these hormones in a dangerous situation is normal, however people who develop PTSD have been found to continue producing this, even after the threat has disappeared.
  3. Changes in the brain – brain scans of people with PTSD show a difference in the way the part of the brain involved in emotional processing appears.
